It’s the biology, stupid!
For three million years, persistence hunters exhausted the hunted animals, whereas many marathon runners exhaust themselves: why shouldn’t it be that way?
The Homo sapiens body—no matter what people may think or pretend—is designed for barefoot long-distance running, namely persistence hunting to catch the animals for food, without using weapons. What we call jogging, marathons or ultramarathons is just the way current humans instinctively practice persistence hunting.
The outcome is the only difference between genuine persistence hunters and current runners. In other words, whereas persistence hunters exhaust the hunted animals, many marathon runners hurt or exhaust themselves. I explain in my book Running Barefoot for Human Survival why and how we can easily achieve the same outcome as our hunter-gatherer ancestors.
Preaching and leading by example
I’m not only preaching, but also leading by example. Therefore, at 69, I completed barefoot for the sixth time the Paris Marathon to keep showing the benefits of running on our naked feet like our ancestors, and, expectedly, I finished the race with absolutely no pain, no injury, no fatigue: my 144th barefoot marathon turned out to be another walk in the park (French: une promenade de santé). After crossing the finish line, I even improvised some push-ups during a TV interview.
It was such a great “hunting experience” in the City of Lights with my son Alexandre Diallo and so many amazing friends and marathoners, including Abdel Chabani, barefoot marathoner Clément Paumelle-Pichon, and Air France flight attendants Jean-Luc Videau, Yane Alvarez and Arnaud Courret-Bonnefond.
Running Barefoot for Human Survival is available on Amazon in paperback and e-book format (French edition: Courir pieds nus pour sauver les humains).
