Dr. Sidy Diallo's Retirement Marathon
Piss off Marathon # 28
Marathon # 380
Date: March 22, 2023
My Time: 5:31:09
By Dr. Barefoot Sidy Diallo
My creative way of retirement celebration
Dr. Sidy Diallo did his 380th marathon to celebrate his retirement at 68 and promote the health and fitness benefits of running. I started the race with my friend Yves Thillot at the town hall of Montigny le Bretonneux in the Paris area.
We headed to the French capital where we ran to the Ministry of Health and places where I studied (The Institute of Political Sciences and La Sorbonne University) or worked (the Hôtel-Dieu hospital and some office buildings of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs), before finishing the marathon at the iconic Eiffel Tower.
This creative way of retirement celebration was intended to show the benefits of running for our physical and mental health, our fitness, our well-being and the prevention of the loss of physical and cognitive autonomy.
I started running at the age of 55, in 2010. I have completed so far 380 marathons and 18 ultramarathons in 103 countries. I have run on all continents, including in Antarctica, where I did a marathon in 2014 and an ultramarathon in 2015. I have been running—depending on the circumstances—barefoot or with minimalist shoes since 2015.
The newspaper Le Parisien: “A 380th marathon at 68: Sidy Diallo’s uncommon way of retirement” (French: un 380e marathon à 68 ans : le départ à la retraite pas comme les autres de Sidy Diallo).
