Doing Marathons Keeps Humans Fit and Healthy
I ran in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, my 122nd truly barefoot marathon and 365th marathon. As I explain in my book Running Barefoot for Human Survival, long-distance running is the effective way to stay fit, healthy, happy and relatively young, and running barefoot prevents pain, injury and fatigue.
It’s the message I’m trying to carry around the world by not only participating in official marathons, but also adding private runs, as I did few weeks ago in Panama City, and this time in six days in Ho Chi Minh City (formerly known as Saigon):
Day One: The 2022 Empire City Marathon
I did the race mostly around the three blocks of Empire City: Linden Residences, Tilia Residences and Cove Residences.
Day 2: I did barefoot in the morning in Empire City my 14th paradise half marathon, and an 8.5 km out-and-back walk to the district 1 in the afternoon.
Day 3: I walked 17.6 km, including an out and back walk to district 1.
Day 4: The Ho Chi Minh City International Marathon
Hoan M. Do kindly drove me and four members of the Empire City Runners—Thanh Nguyen, Linh Huynh, Julia Nguyen and Chung Nguyen—to the start of the race in front of the Saigon Zoo. The HCMC International Marathon is one of the best tropical marathons with a very barefoot friendly course, except for few hundred meters.
Day 5: I did barefoot my 15th paradise half marathon.
Day 6: The 2022 Tilia Residences Marathon
I did barefoot in Empire City over 80 laps around the Tilia Residences block for my sixth paradise marathon. Hoan M. Do—the co-founder of the club Empire City Runners—joined me barefoot for over 10 km.
Day 7: I flew back to France, where I was greeted with snow and freezing temperatures, i.e. the worst-case scenario for any barefoot or naked human, and a tough reminder that Homo sapiens is a hunter gatherer tropical species, which means that our natural habitat is in the tropical climate, often referred to as the “tropical paradise.”
And the fact that humans are a tropical species explains why we can’t survive in the cold regions without artificial protection, such as clothes, housing or heating, and why some Europeans are currently so dreading the prospect of power and heating shortages.
Running Barefoot for Human Survival is available on Amazon in paperback and e-book format (French edition: Courir pieds nus pour sauver les humains).
