Dr. Sidy Diallo keeps trying to boost the motivation for the preventive and effective combat against comorbidities and pandemics.
The 2021 Farewell Marathon
My Marathon # 323/My marathon # 24 in 18 weeks
Absurdistan Marathon # 32
Date: December 31, 2021
My time: 5:36:28
By Dr. Barefoot Sidy Diallo
I invited friends to run or walk on Friday, December 31—or close to that date—, in solo or with friends 10 km, 15 km, 10 miles, a half marathon or a marathon to say goodbye to 2021 and raise awareness of the need to reduce our vulnerability to pandemics, by adapting our lifestyle to our biology of hunter-gatherers. It was a great pleasure to run with Gisèle, Sandrine, Boubou, Guillaume, Valérie, Louis and Mathilde. See more about the Event on Facebook.
Rationale
It’s great to have vaccines and pills against the COVID-19, but we should also focus on reducing our vulnerability to pandemics, by preventing and where possible eradicating the so-called comorbidities, thanks to long-distance running or walking, healthy and responsible consumption, etc. Sadly, partly due to race cancellations, many people have lost the motivation to run, which is translating into fewer finishers in many races. What’s more, many comorbidities have worsened since the outbreak of the current pandemic.
For instance, NPR pointed out in September 2021 that: “The pandemic’s effect on America’s waistline has been rough. New data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention showed 16 states now have obesity rates of 35% or higher. That’s an increase of four states—Delaware, Iowa, Ohio and Texas—in just a year. The findings confirm what several recent research studies have found. Many Americans have gained significant weight since the COVID-19 crisis started. And those rates are rising faster among racial minorities.”
Meanwhile, wrote the Dutch news website NOS.nl, “More and more people are registering for gastric reduction surgery at obesity clinics. The number of registrations has increased by 15 percent since the start of the corona crisis. In the Netherlands, half of adults are overweight. About 14 percent are obese. Of the corona patients in the ICU, 80 percent are overweight and 40 percent obese. About 12,000 gastric reduction operations are performed annually...”
