I did in Western France my 359th marathon. The mostly unpaved course required minimal foot protection.
I started the marathon barefoot, but when the course turned out to be mostly on unpaved paths I put on my worn-out minimalist shoes, which means that I did a shod marathon. I still finished the race like my barefoot marathons, namely without any pain, injury or fatigue. I just missed the pleasure of the direct contact with the ground.
Barefoot Means Barefoot
As I explain in the book Running Barefoot for Human Survival, “There are no such things as barefoot shoes. Any shoes are shoes, and barefoot means barefoot, i.e. naked feet. And just for the record, here’s the definition of the adjective and adverb ‘barefoot’ by, for instance, the Cambridge Dictionary: ‘Not wearing any shoes or socks.’ ”
