The 2021 Vienna Marathon
Marathon # 302
Barefoot Marathon # 93
Date: September 12, 2021
My Time: 4:24:53
By Dr. Barefoot Sidy Diallo
I ran on September 12, 2021, in Vienna, Austria my third official marathon in 15 days and my first international barefoot marathon since the 2020 Los Angeles Marathon. I kept announcing during the first half of the race, i.e. before the shod runners started feeling pain: “Shoes are the problem.”
The Winner Disqualified For Wearing Wrong Shoes
The winner of the race—who was too far to hear me—ended up with a shoe problem that nobody had so far thought about. He was disqualified because of his shoes, as Reuters reported: “Ethiopia’s Derara Hurisa won the Vienna Marathon on Sunday but was disqualified soon after when the soles of his shoes were found to be one centimeter too thick in violation of the rules. Hurisa was left distraught when his time was struck off as his shoe soles were five centimeters thick. The soles of road running shoes cannot be thicker than four centimeters...”
One Death
Furthermore, a 40-year-old participant in the half marathon collapsed shortly before the finish line and was rushed to a hospital where he died, officially from cardiovascular arrest, but the real cause of death is his underling health condition that triggered the cardiac arrest.
Death in a Marathon is one of the chapters of the book my book Running Barefoot for Human Survival. The book is available on Amazon in paperback and e-book format (French edition: Courir pieds nus pour sauver les humains).
