April 24, 2020
On April 24, 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic had already claimed nearly 200,000 official deaths, according to World Health Organization (WHO). But the exact figures are likely higher, since most countries are not counting all the dead. Furthermore, the collateral damage of the lockdowns includes increased domestic violence, more consumption of unhealthy products, aggravation of chronic diseases (overweight, obesity, diabetes, high blood pressure and other cardiovascular diseases, Alzheimer’s disease, etc.) and other physical or mental health issues. And finally, questionable lockdowns in some countries, where the most life-threatening danger is not the novel coronavirus, but hunger, are causing unnecessary human tragedy, including starvation.
Sadly but unsurprisingly, all the focus is on masks, respirators, new vaccines and drugs, etc., while prevention through physical activity and healthy lifestyle is the only effective weapon against many chronic diseases, and therefore against the COVID pandemics. Hence the need to keep running and building up our natural defense against those lethal enemies. For instance, here are the numbers of registered deaths per million population caused by the COVID-19 pandemic until April 24, 2020, in some European countries (between 250 and 1179 deaths) versus in some African countries (between 0.5 and 2 deaths):

So let’s run regularly to keep the momentum, and participate monthly, on the third Sunday (or on one of the two previous days), in a Prevention Marathon Against Pandemics. Each runner may do any distance between 2 km and the marathon, but it would be great to increase progressively her or his distance. The participation may be in a lonely run, in small groups local circumstances permitting, or later in official races.
Here’s the calendar of the first four races:
May 2020 Prevention Marathon Against Pandemics (Sunday 17)
June 2020 Prevention Marathon Against Pandemics (Sunday 21)
July 2020 Prevention Marathon Against Pandemics (Sunday 19)
August 2020 Prevention Marathon Against Pandemics (Sunday 16)
