I did my 578th marathon from the town of Montigny-le-Bretonneux to Paris where I finished the race in front of the Statue of Liberty on Swan Island. Highlights of the route included the Palace of Versailles—with its gardens and the Grand Canal—as well as Swan Island, known as a peaceful spot for a walk that offers beautiful views of the Eiffel Tower. It was my favorite place for walking and running barefoot back in 2015 and 2016; my office was located nearby on Javel Street.
Swan Island (French: l’Île aux Cygnes) is located on the River Seine and is home to a replica of New York’s Statue of Liberty. Gifted by the Americans in 1889 to commemorate the French Revolution, this replica faces the original statue across the Atlantic—itself a gift from the French people to the United States, designed by French sculptor Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi, with a metal structure created by Gustave Eiffel.
