Mayday or May Day?
On Labor Day I did our anthropological labor by walking 42.2 km in nearly 8 hours through all the neighborhoods of Maspalomas: Playa del Inglés, San Agustin, Playa del Aguila, Bahia Feliz, El Tablero, Sonnenland, Campo Internacional, Meloneras and Campo de Golf.
Labor Day—also called International Workers’ Day or May Day—is a public holiday to honor and recognize the labor movements and the contributions of laborers to the economy. Most of the countries celebrate Labor Day on May 1 to commemorate the general labor strike of the working-class in the United States on May 1, 1886, which was intended to support their demand for the 8-hour day. The United States and Canada celebrate Labor Day on the first Monday of September.
The world has dramatically changed since 1886, not always for the best, so much so that the last human species is distressfully calling “Mayday, mayday!” Well, doing the anthropological labor, i.e. long-distance running or walking, will not only make humans healthier and fitter, but will also help rescue our species, hence the name of my race on Labor Day. By the way, “mayday” is the phonetic equivalent of the French “m’aider,” which means “help me.”
My book Running Barefoot for Human Survival (French edition: Courir pieds nus pour sauver les humains) is available on Amazon in paperback and e-book format.
