The 2024 Lanzarote Marathon, Canary Islands, Spain
Marathon # 465
Date: December 7, 2024
My Time : 4:53:27
By Dr. Barefoot Sidy Diallo
I did in Lanzarote the only road marathon of the Canary Islands, as both Gran Canaria and Tenerife sadly decided to terminate their marathons last year. The scenic and coastal course is an out-and-back between two of the main touristic destinations of Lanzarote: from Costa Teguise to Puerto del Carmen, and back to Costa Teguise. We ran twice through the Island’s capital—Arrecife—and along the airport where many approaching planes flew few meters above our heads on their way to the runway of one of the busiest airports in the Canary Islands.
My wife did the half marathon distance, starting at the turnaround in Puerto del Carmen. Prior to the race, we visited in Lanzarote the Timanfaya National Park, the Cueva de Los Verdes and the Jameos del Agua, and we also toured the two neighboring islands: Fuerteventura and La Graciosa.
The 2024 Lanzarote Ultramarathon
By the way, I did actually a 51 km ultramarathon as I added a 9 km walk to the start of the marathon and back to the Barcelo Active Resort after the race. I did another marathon in Puerto del Carmen just three days after the Lanzarote Marathon.
My book Running Barefoot for Human Survival is available on Amazon in paperback and e-book format (French edition: Courir pieds nus pour sauver les humains).
